Women of Wonder | Lise Lyon

We met Lise Lyon on a cold and rainy morning, and what a ray of sunshine she was. A few months past her 30th birthday, this girl has already done what most people only dream about. Successful t-shirt brand, check. Coffee shop, check. And she’s not stopping. The sky is the limit for this dazzling woman, which is why we chose her as this week’s Women of Wonder.

We are happy to introduce you to Lise Lyon. Enjoy!

I am Lise, my name derived from my fabulous and fashionable late grandmother Lily Louisa. I am so passionate about fashion, coffee, and life, it’s not even funny.

I’m witty, silly with a wicked sense of humor. I laugh at myself a lot. I’m a creative adventure seeker who wants to make the world a better place one day at a time. I can do anything I put my mind to and this I proved to myself this year.

I don’t like losing and will work for what I want and to get to where I want.

I always knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer and therefore after school I went to study in Stellenbosch at Elizabeth Galloway. After that, I worked for high end woman’s retail boutiques where I quickly learnt the ins and outs of the business.

In 2011, I started my own label and opened up a beautiful retail space in Pretoria. L2 for Lise Lyon just grew stronger as the years past. I noticed that my hand drawn images, that I direcly print (dtg) onto my t-shirts, was where my money was at. I started doing markets on weekends and sold out at every one. Then and there I knew I had something special here. I started off with one table and 3 piles of t-shirts and am now at 2 x 1.8m tables. I love every part of the creative process of my job. All my t-shirts are proudly South African and that is something I strive for.

This year March, I closed my doors because there just wasn’t enough feet to cover rental costs and I decided to just focus on markets. Just my luck, as it has always been a dream of mine, a spot opened and I saw a gap in the area to open a café . With no experience and one month lead time, I built and established my coffee shop – Coffee Corner. I did my barista training at Illy and practice makes perfect. It was all trial and error, and one of the  most challenging things I have ever done. Running two businesses at once, the shop in the week and doing night markets and events on weekends with L2.

I have found that the more you do, the more you are capable of. There is no school that can teach you the tricks of the trade. Its jump in and swim.

  1. What makes you happy? Making other people happy. Having customers returning for more and appreciating what I do.
  2. If there was only one thing you wanted the world to say about you, what would It be? That I don’t give up easily or at all. That I always have a smile on my face and am kind hearted.
  3. Who inspires you in life and why? My parents played a big role in my life and have inspired me. The way they love each other unconditionally. My dad for giving me the best business advice and being brutally honest and my mom for being my number 1 fan. If I can only be half the woman she is someday I would be happy. She was the one who taught me from a young age that if you like it wear it.
  4. What is your superpower? Do not underestimate my strength, dynamite comes in small packages.
  5. How do you handle criticism? Very well. I am my worst enemy so I always ask for feedback on everything I do. Good or bad.
  6. In one year from now, what will you be celebrating? Being with one of the most intelligent and big-hearted men I have ever met. And running my businesses with more ease.
  7. What has been the hardest business decision you have ever made? Moving out of my comfort zone retail space and diving into the unknown of opening and running a coffee shop with all my own funds.
  8. When did you know that THIS is what you wanted to do for a living? When working every day becomes a happy habit because each day comes with challenges that you never expect. Just when you think you’ve got this under control something/one pulls the ground out right from beneath you.
  9. Where is your happy place? At the end of a hard day in a tub of flower scented relaxing bubble bath.
  10. What is one quote that inspires you?

I’m Marolee. A creative, and sometimes all over the place influencer, and yes, also a bit crazy. But as they say, “I might be crazy, but all the best people are”.

I have been in the interior design and décor industry for quite some time. On my journey thus far, everywhere where I have taken a pit stop, I have learned something new that I keep safe with me. This has empowered me to not only dream about but to open my own Décor and Flower Shop in Pretoria. I feel that anything that appeals to the human eye automatically appeals to the heart. That is why I fill my day, either by creating fabulous spaces, styling, or creating breathtaking ideas. This is not only my passion and my life, and I intend to influence the world by using creative ideas and being a trendsetter.

My motto is: “Life in itself is the ultimate work of art”.

  1. What makes you happy? Cuddles with my two adorable French poodles, Phoebe and Khaleesi, (Yes I named my dog after a Game of Thrones character, HUGE fan). Spending times with my amazing family, wine and my moms “kookkos”.
  2. If there was only one thing you wanted the world to say about you, what would It be? Wow, look at that girl go!
  3.  Who inspires you in life and why? Young, independent strong women, who grab life by the balls, are not afraid to be who and what they are, and who build their own empires.
  4. What is your superpower? I can quickly pick up on people’s moods.
  5. How do you handle criticism? If you open your doors, (literally, when I open the shop’s door), you open yourself to people’s opinions and sometimes also criticism. Sometimes you need to listen, and other times just brush it off and move along. We all have a gut feel, listen to your gut.
  6. In one year from now, what will you be celebrating? The Birthday of my shop, and hopefully a new (ad)venture.
  7. What has been the hardest business decision you have ever made? Admitting that you do need help and advice from other people more experience in life than you.
  8. When did you know that THIS is what you wanted to do for a living? When I was a little girl of 5, drawing my dream house in detail.
  9. Where is your happy place? Between my people, friends and family.
  10. What is one quote that inspires you: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Women of Wonder | Littish Beyleveld

Women of Wonder

The people of this world have created a lot of amazing things, but nothing pulls on our heartstrings quite like a woman going after something she is passionate about, and Littish Beyleveld is one of those women. She’s not only chasing one dream but two.

We smiled after reading her interview, as she says her superpower is kindness, a rare trait, and exactly how we would describe her. Kind, bubbly, intelligent, with impeccable taste. Someone you want to be friends with. Even if you don’t know her subjects, her photos make you feel happy inside. Her shop, Bella & Me, is the perfect place to find a unique gift. Beware, you may end up re-doing all your kid’s rooms if you stay too long.

It’s with our greatest pleasure to introduce you to Littish.

I’m a believer, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, photographer, entrepreneur and lover of all things beautiful.

I’m a self-taught, natural light, lifestyle photographer based in Pretoria, South Africa.

I started this amazing photography journey about five years ago in London, England through pure curiosity. For the first time in my life, I can honestly say that I’ve found my calling and I love being behind the lens.

Even though I’ve photographed all different kinds of moments like birthdays and engagements, as well as newborn, maternity, cake smash, corporate, interior, product, and boudoir shoots, my favourite memories to capture are weddings, newborns, and families.

My founding idea for Bella & Me is to discover the most original and stylish mom, baby and kids items from the best creative businesses in South Africa. I want to bring them all together in one place, making it easy for moms (and dads) to browse and buy. Bella is my beloved daughter. Through her, I learn to love, laugh, be patient, see the beauty in everything, and enjoy and appreciate life. I founded Bella & Me in 2013 while sitting at my kitchen table and I’m very excited to share this journey with you.

  1. What makes you happy? My two girls, my family, and friends make me happy… but also my career, music, traveling, good food and being creative. Oh, and anything beautiful.
  2. If there was only one thing you wanted the world to say about you, what would It be? It would be that I am kind. To me, being kind is everything. This is something my mom taught us from a very young age. I remember my mom giving my Minnie Mouse umbrella to a beggar on a rainy day, I was 5 years old. If being kind is the only thing I can teach my two girls, I would be the happiest mom ever…
  3. Who inspires you in life and why? My big sister, Joline inspires me. She is an amazing mom, wife and business woman. She taught me the importance of integrity.
  4. What is your superpower? I am a single mom, I can feed and do night drill…. I have a nine-month-old baby, a four-year-old and a 10-week old puppy.
  5. How do you handle criticism? I think I handle criticism very well. I love learning from others and see criticism as a way to grow.
  6.  In one year from now, what will you be celebrating? This one is hard… love, health, happiness, success and hopefully the new charity I want to start…
  7.  What has been the hardest business decision you have ever made? I had a little coffee shop in London about 6 years ago, I sold my shares when I became a mom, that was very hard for me because I loved everything about that little shop.
  8. When did you know that THIS is what you wanted to do for a living? Well, do you want me to be honest? Two months ago… when I decided to take the leap and open the studio and shop in one month.
  9. Where is your happy place? With my loved ones. The bush.
  10. What is one quote that inspires you? this-year-i-will-be-fierce
